The National Center for Children in Poverty revisits the original “Unclaimed Children” report, 25 years later. They find that the “majority of states are taking tangible steps to improve their mental health delivery systems for children and youth” although the “changes, while promising, are often severely limited in scope and shallow in depth due to lack of concerted strategic plans.”

Aug 2008 Postpartum Depression Affects Mothers and Babies

This study from the Centers for Disease Control reports that 10-15% of new mothers have symptoms of postpartum depression, which can strongly affect the physical and psychological health of both babies and mothers. The risk is higher if the mother is younger, has less education, receives Medicaid benefits, is stressed or abused in her relationship with her partner, used tobacco during her pregnancy, experienced traumatic or financial stress during her pregnancy, or has a low- birth-weight baby.
